The Breed
The Canadian Sphynx
Often called "the dog of the cat world," the Canadian Sphynx is one of the most affectionate, intelligent, and engaging cat breeds. These hairless felines are profoundly social, endlessly curious, and thrive on human companionship. They are known for their playful energy, loyal nature, and desire to be involved in every aspect of their family's daily life.
Appearance
The Canadian Sphynx is instantly recognizable by its striking, hairless appearance. Their skin is covered in a very fine, almost imperceptible layer of down that feels warm and suede-like to the touch. Characteristic wrinkles, especially around the forehead, neck, and shoulders, enhance their unique, sculpted, athletic look. They have a medium-sized, muscular build, broad chest, long legs, and large, expressive eyes paired with prominent, bat-like ears.
Temperament
Sphynx cats are outgoing, extroverted, and remarkably affectionate. Often described as "velcro cats," they love to perch on shoulders, cuddle in laps, and follow their humans from room to room. Highly intelligent and trainable, they enjoy interactive play, learning tricks, and socializing with people and other pets.
History
The modern Canadian Sphynx traces its origins to Toronto, Canada, in 1966, when a natural genetic mutation produced the first hairless kitten. Through dedicated breeding programs, the breed was developed with careful attention to health and genetic diversity. It is now recognized by major cat registries including TICA and CFA.

Care Requirements
Caring for a Canadian Sphynx requires some specific attention due to their lack of fur, but their loving personality makes the extra care well worth it.
Skin Care
Over-bathing can actually stimulate more oil production and make their skin dirtier. We recommend bathing only when truly needed, using a gentle, cat-safe shampoo. For regular maintenance, simply wipe their body with baby wipes or hypoallergenic pet wipes. A high-quality diet plays a major role — proper nutrition results in cleaner, healthier, and less oily skin.
Temperature Regulation
Sphynx cats have a higher body temperature and very little insulation. They need a warm environment (ideally 75–80°F / 24–27°C) and often enjoy wearing cat sweaters or fleece clothing in cooler weather.
Nutrition
They have a faster metabolism and require high-quality, nutrient-dense food. Many breeders recommend a mix of raw or high-protein wet food supplemented with Royal Canin or other premium diets. Fresh water should always be available.
Grooming
Regular ear cleaning is essential to prevent wax buildup. Nails should be trimmed every 1–2 weeks, and teeth brushing (or dental treats) helps maintain oral health.
Health Monitoring
Sphynx are prone to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). Reputable breeders screen all breeding cats annually with a board-certified cardiologist. Routine veterinary check-ups are important.
Environment
They love warm, soft bedding, sunny windows, and interactive toys. Providing cat trees, scratching posts, and companionship (or a feline friend) helps keep them happy and stimulated.

Nutrition is the foundation of a Sphynx's health. Our kittens grow on a carefully balanced raw diet prepared in-house from my own recipe, developed over years of working with the breed.
As an official partner of Royal Canin, every kitten is also introduced to their dry food and wet food formulas. New families can choose to continue with raw, Royal Canin, or a combination — whichever fits your lifestyle best.
